F16 MFD

This is the 3D model constructed out of an authentic F16 MFD bezel unit. It comes complete with buttons, and PCB. It tails out a 20 pin ribbon cable, supposedly snake into the CRT box behind it. It consists of 4 layers.

  1. 1. A font facing black powder coated cast aluminum frame.

  2. 2. A clear Acrylic light panel. This is coated on one side and the sides with white inner reflective paint and a matte black paint.

  3. 3. A 3 layer PCB forming a supposedly button matrix and light bulb circuit.

  4. 4. A back fiber or bakelite back plate, with the ribbon cable thread through a cutout and epoxy potted.

The Thrustmaster Cougar MFD is actually very close to the authentic part, it even has fake rubber Philip screw heads! It even has the USB MCU epoxy potted directly on the internal PCB! But, I really hate that no tactile feel of the rubber dome buttons TM used! The authentic one, surprisingly, used steel dome membrane buttons. The travel is still very little, but gives a positive click. However, the authentic one does not have any electronics in it, also, the buttons seem to be connected through a matrix (28 buttons, but only 20 wires tells you something.). So, to drive an authentic MFD bezel, you’d need a USB MCU. Hempstick is perfect for that, but I wouldn’t be using my authentic MFD. I would attempt to replicate it and drive it with Hempstick together with a rear projection with a pico DLP projector!

So, to do your MFD quick, use a pair of TM MFD! But only use my 3D model if you want to hack it or need some dimension from it.

In this model, I do not provide a download SLDPRT/ASM or zip file pack. The reason is that there are several buttons, lights and other parts referenced in the assembly.  Some of these parts are reusable in other assembly, so I have been creating a library of buttons, switches, lights, etc. and then have individual panel’s assembly files reference parts in this library. As more and more reusable parts get added, if I continue to provide self-contained download files, I will eventually lose track of which one goes to which. At creation of these self-contained files, it’s not a very big problem, but as parts gets more and more complex and referencing more and more external parts, it will be a maintenance nightmare.

So, I have published the entire F16 3D part model repository to GitHub. It’s a mere mirror repository so everybody in the world has read access. And I don’t have to give out too many accounts on the server in my home. The public GitHub repository, nobody has write access to it, except me. But for the origin repository in my home, only I and a couple of selected few have write access to it. If you want write access to contribute to the models, please contact me for an account.

Having said that, please note that I do not list the buttons and lights used by MFD individually on the knobs/buttons page on this site, because the chance of other panels using them are nearly nil.
