Recently, I have been on the blunt end of forum posting spam attack from Russia. Either they employed the cheap labor attack or they found a way to bypass the CAPCHA and email reply confirmation. The forum was flooded w/ spam messages and fake users with spam info on their profiles.

So, in response, I temporarily turned off user registration, and then blocked off their entire IP subnet at the firewall. The entire network is blocked off. Several networks were blocked entirely. I do not care if it's an ISP, or a network that is entirely owned by the spammers. I cannot tell, nor do I care. If you are an ISP allowing spammers to operate on your network making such "blood money", I hold you accountable for accessory! Thus, your entire network, including your "clean" customers are denied my service.

I have turned on user registration for the time being. If the spamming starts again, I will turn it off again if needed.

Hello,
I registered and when I clicked on the activation link (in the email) I received a "invalid key" message. The same thing occurred when I tried manual activation, but obviously I am in! Just an FYI.

I have locked up the new user registration again.

The Russians are just too relentless on the forum spamming.

My practice had been to find the spammer's IP# from the log files, and do a whois search on it. Then I block the whole block of IP#s. I know they are from the ISPs, and I don't give a shit. You host spammers on your /10 network, I shit list your whole /10 network with Linux iptables, in hope that eventually I get most of the shitty ISPs (or most of them to make a difference in my life).

Unfortunately, I am on the losing end of the battle. There are just too many shitty ISPs willing to look the other way. I simply spend too much time cleaning up and shit listing these people. They got nothing better to do, but I do. So, I am closing the new user registration permanently.
